What is a FibroScan? A FibroScan is a non-invasive, painless test that checks the health of your liver. It measures liver stiffness and fat levels, helping to detect early signs of liver damage or fatty liver disease. It’s quick, safe, and delivers immediate results—no needles or sedation needed.
Is the scan painful? Not at all. The scan is almost completely painless. You may feel a gentle pulse on your skin where the probe is placed, but most patients find it comfortable and stress-free.
How long does the scan take? The actual FibroScan takes about 10 minutes, and your total appointment time is usually around 20–30 minutes. You can get right back to your day afterwards—no recovery time needed.
Who should have a liver scan? You should consider a liver scan if you: • Drink alcohol regularly or have a history of heavy drinking • Are overweight or have type 2 diabetes • Have high cholesterol or metabolic syndrome • Have abnormal liver blood tests (ALT, AST) • Have a family history of liver disease • Want peace of mind about your liver health If you’re unsure, our team can help you decide - just email or message us!
Do I need to fast or prepare before the scan? Yes. We recommend fasting for at least 3 hours before your appointment. This helps ensure the most accurate results for liver stiffness.
Will I get my results on the day? Yes! You’ll receive your results immediately after the scan. Our clinicians will explain what the numbers mean and provide advice on next steps, if needed.
Do I need a referral from my GP? No referral is needed. You can book directly with us - no GP or hospital waitlists involved.
Is the scan covered by private insurance or the NHS? Our FibroScan service is self-pay, and we aim to keep prices affordable. You will need to check with your private insurer if you want to claim reimbursement. At present, the NHS does not cover scans booked directly through SN Hub.
